Homemade Tortillas

Who needs store-bought tortillas when you can make your own with just 4 simple ingredients? These homemade tortillas are not only easy to whip up, but they’re also a great hands-on activity for kids. From kneading the dough to rolling it out, it’s a fun way to get the whole family involved in the kitchen. Plus, the flavor and texture are unbeatable—soft, fresh, and perfect for tacos, wraps, or snacking straight off the skillet! 🌮✨

Make 16 street taco (or 8 standard size) tortillas

INGREDIENTS

  • 3/4 cup hot water

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 2 cups all-purpose or gluten-free flour

  • 2 tbsp avocado or olive oil

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a small bowl, mix the salt into the hot water and stir until fully dissolved.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, add 2 cups of flour and make a well in the center.

  3. Pour in the oil and the hot water mixture.

  4. Stir everything together until a soft dough starts to form.

  5. Transfer the dough onto a clean countertop and knead for 3-5 minutes until it forms a smooth, non-sticky ball.

  6. Cut the dough into equal portions, depending on the size tortillas you want. For mini street tacos, divide into about 12 small pieces.

  7. Roll each portion into a thin circle.

  8. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat until it’s nice and hot.

  9. Place a tortilla on the skillet and cook for 30-60 seconds per side, or until lightly browned and puffed.

  10. Serve warm with your favorite fillings or toppings!

Using the tortilla press.

While you can certainly using a rolling pin or your hands to roll these out, the tortilla press made it a thousand times easier. The girls were able to do it independently while I cooked the tortillas.

We love taco night because everyone can make it how they like.

Kennedy chose to make street taco fajitas and tried roasted peppers and onions for the first time!
