When the Music Stops: A Lesson in Confidence and Resilience

Yesterday was one of those moments that hits you right in the heart. My daughter’s cheer team had a competition, and they’d worked so hard, pouring countless hours into every move, every count, every moment. As a mom, you’re already brimming with pride before they even hit the floor. But what happened next left me—and every other parent—on the edge of our seats.

Midway through their performance, as the girls were mid-routine with one of their teammates mid back handspring, the unthinkable happened: the music cut out. Just stopped. Silence. For a split second, you could feel the shock ripple through the crowd. Our hearts stopped along with the music, and I could feel my own stomach drop (you can hear me say “oh no” in the video. But what those girls did next? That’s where the magic happened.

Without a beat, they jumped right into plan B. They started counting, louder and stronger with each move, syncing every step as if they had rehearsed it this way all along. They didn’t just finish—they nailed it, hitting every count with perfect precision. And get this: zero deductions. I could barely hold it together (and yes, I’d conveniently forgotten mascara that morning, which ended up saving me from full-on raccoon eyes).

Here's a clip of their performance—watch for yourself, and you’ll see what I mean. 👇

Watching them pull through with such resilience and confidence reminded me why I’m so passionate about the upcoming Bloom retreat. This moment was the perfect example of self-efficacy—the inner belief that they could get through it, even with the odds against them. These girls didn’t stop. They didn’t look around for help or lose focus. They had the tools within them to push through, and it was nothing short of inspiring.

It’s moments like these that reinforce why I created Bloom. We can’t always shield our kids from life’s challenges, but we can equip them with the confidence and self-belief to thrive when life’s “music” suddenly stops. Bloom is a day dedicated to building that foundation for our girls—to help them grow into young women who believe in their strength, who can handle the unexpected, and who don’t back down when things get tough.

This last section is where the tears really started flowing. The moment I realized they were about to finish this routine with no errors despite no music!

If you want this for your daughter, if you want to give her the tools to bloom no matter what comes her way, join us at Bloom retreat. It’s a day she’ll carry with her long after it’s over, and a gift you can give her that will last a lifetime.
